Table Setting 101
Here’s some basic knowledge for Table Setting.
1. Use white porcelain. It’s easy to mix and match with other color and give that ‘special’ effect.
2. Use some centerpiece like flower.
3. Tableware
- Use place mat. If you don’t have that special place mat, use any kind of flat plate for the base. If it’s a formal occasion use the silver one.
- Put the dinner plate on top of the place mat. If you have rice on the menu, use concave plate.
- If you have soup on the menu, use soup bowl with the cover and small plate for the base. Put it on the left side. You can put it on top of your dinner plate too but some people wouldn’t feel comfort due to some hygiene issue.
- Use the cutlery based on the menu. The first cutlery to use put it in the far-right-side. For example, soup spoon, fork salad, tablespoon and knife if you use any. While on the left side, normally there’s fork.
- Cutlery that use for dessert, put it in the top side of your plate.
- For Chinese cuisine, put the soup spoon in the far-right-side after that the chopsticks. You can also put the soup spoon in the soup bowl.
- If you haven’t finished eating, arrange the cutlery in ‘A’ shape on your plate.
- If you already finish, align the cutlery together on the four-o-clock direction on the plate.
4. Glassware
- Put it in the top-right side of your plate.
- The arrangement should be wine glass first after that the glass for water.
- Make sure the white wine glass, red wine glass, champagne glass or the glass for water is the correct one
- If you use jug for water, put it on the right side from the host-seating.
5. Napkin
- You can put it on top of your place mat, on the right side or on top side of your plate.
- If you haven’t finished the eating but you need to leave the table for a while, put the napkin in your chair.
- If you already finish eating, put the napkin on the table.
6. Name Tag – if you use one, put it on top side of the plate.
7. Small Souvenirs – If there’s any small souvenirs for each person, put it next to the name tag.
8. Bag Hook – If you use any bag hook, put it in the left side.
